Srinagar, Dec 26 (KNO): In a significant move towards making Srinagar roads safer and more commuter-friendly, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, on Friday approved a series of traffic interventions aimed at easing congestion and streamlining urban mobility. According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Divisional Commissioner Garg, while chairing a meeting of the Multi-Disciplinary Committee (MDC) on Traffic Management issued slew of directions to decongest Srinagar city. The Divisional Commissioner reviewed on-ground progress and gave the green light for construction of a rotary at Exchange Junction, widening of roads at Sangarmal and improvements at Jahangir Chowk to ensure smoother traffic flow on MA Road, said an official. He said these measures are part of a phased plan that bridges policy planning with tangible action. The meeting, officials said, focused on commuter welfare, with the Divisional Commissioner declaring no-horn zones near JVC, Children’s Hospital, and Karan Nagar to reduce noise pollution and create a safer, quieter environment for pedestrians and local residents. On parking infrastructure, he directed Srinagar Smart City Ltd to fast-track tenders for IT-based parking at Harwan, Nehru Park and Makai Park, while urging early resolution of the proposed multi-level parking near Jamia Masjid in coordination with the Auqaf Committee. The meeting also covered ongoing traffic modernization projects, including color coding of minibuses in the western zone, realignment of e-bus routes and installation of Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras across the city for real-time monitoring and enforcement. “Accident-prone stretches along the Parimpora–Narbal corridor were flagged for joint inspection by PWD and BEACON to enhance road safety,” the officials added. They said the meeting marked a visible shift from planning to execution, following the Divisional Commissioner Garg’s announcement on November 29 of a multidisciplinary committee to design a unified urban mobility strategy. “The focus is now on tangible results and safer roads, regulated traffic and commuter-centric solutions,” the officials added—(KNO)
